It is the only retinal prosthesis currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA; 2013). It has additionally received the Conformité Européenne (CE; 2011) mark and has been approved by Health Canada (2015). The Argus II includes an external (wearable) and internal (surgically implanted) component. The external equipment consists of glasses, a video processing unit (VPU), and a wired cable ( Figure 39-1A ). The glasses hold a video micro-camera in the nasal bridge that transmits images to the wired VPU for image processing. The VPU transforms the images to data that are then transmitted wirelessly to the internal implant in the eye, which also receives power wirelessly via induction from the external hardware.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21097893","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4399093407","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.15469062,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1201/9781003523703-39","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Neuroscience and Neural Engineering","Retinal and Macular Surgery","EEG and Brain-Computer Interfaces"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Retinal Prosthesis","Argus","Retinal implant","Implant","Prosthesis","Visual prosthesis","Medicine","Retinal","Computer science","Ophthalmology","Surgery"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Zero hunger"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-17T18:57:46.842090Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
