Oogenesis is divided into four phases: (a) multiplication phase of oogonia, (b) initial growth phase of oocytes I, (c) proper growth phase of oocytes I (vitellogenesis), and (d) post-growth phase of oocytes I. All oocytes of an animal are seldom in the same phase of oogenesis.
