DATA SOURCES: Databases searched included both international electronic databases (MEDLINE® via PubMed, Cochrane Library CENTRAL, EMBASE, and CINAHL®) as well as Korean electronic databases (KMBASE, KOREAMED, RISS, KISS, and NANET) through December 2013. DATA SYNTHESIS: A meta-analysis was conducted of 15 studies involving 14 controlled trials (7 randomized and 7 nonrandomized) with 889 patients with cancer. Spiritual interventions were compared with a usual care control group or other psychosocial interventions. The weighted average effect size across studies was -0.48 (p = 0.006, I2 = 65%) for spiritual well-being, -0.58 (p = 0.02, I2 = 70%) for meaning of life, -0.87 (p = 0.02, I2 = 87%) for anxiety, and -0.62 (p = 0.001, I2 = 73%) for depression. CONCLUSIONS: The findings showed that spiritual interventions had significant but moderate effects on spiritual well-being, meaning of life, and depression. However, the evidence remains weak because of the mixed study design and substantial heterogeneity. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Oncology nurses increasingly recognize the significance of the spiritual domain of care. The current study indicates that facilitating spiritual awareness and needs may be a worthwhile nursing intervention for patients with cancer.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.477336814478207,"endowment":4.477336814478207,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"25158666","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2082942612","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.9336,"citation_percentile":0.71532847,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2015,"count":4},{"year":2016,"count":3},{"year":2017,"count":9},{"year":2018,"count":16},{"year":2019,"count":7},{"year":2020,"count":13},{"year":2021,"count":8},{"year":2022,"count":7},{"year":2023,"count":12},{"year":2024,"count":3},{"year":2025,"count":3},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"http://ons.metapress.com/index/C881304R2U1Q028N.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1188/14.onf.e290-e301","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25158666","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Religion, Spirituality, and Psychology","Workplace Spirituality and Leadership","Mindfulness and Compassion Interventions","Adaptation, Psychological","Anxiety","Attitude to Death","Controlled Clinical Trials as Topic","Counseling","Depression","Existentialism","Humans","Neoplasms","Nurse's Role","Psychology, Clinical","Psychotherapy, Group","Publication Bias","Quality of Life","Randomized Controlled Trials as Topic","Spiritual Therapies","Spirituality","Stress, Psychological","Treatment Outcome"],"mesh_terms":["Adaptation, Psychological","Anxiety","Attitude to Death","Counseling","Depression","Existentialism","Humans","Neoplasms","Psychology, Clinical","Psychotherapy, Group","Quality of Life","Stress, Psychological","Randomized Controlled Trials as Topic","Treatment Outcome","Publication Bias","Controlled Clinical Trials as Topic","Nurse's Role","Spiritual Therapies","Spirituality"],"keywords":["Medicine","CINAHL","Meta-analysis","Cochrane Library","MEDLINE","Psychological intervention","KISS (TNC)","Family medicine","Internal medicine","Nursing","Cancer","Depression","Anxiety","Spirituality"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-03T16:21:23.547473Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
