The metastatic process is governed by a network of molecules of which SLUG is known to play a major role as a regulator of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Prostate-derived ETS factor (PDEF) has been proposed as a tumor suppressor, possibly through inhibition of invasion and metastasis; therefore, understanding the mechanism of PDEF regulation may help to better understand its role in breast cancer progression. This study shows for the first time that the transcription factor SLUG is a direct target of PDEF in breast cancer. We show that the expression of PDEF is able to suppress/dampen EMT through the negative regulation of SLUG. In addition, we show that PDEF is also able to regulate downstream targets of SLUG, namely E-cadherin, in both SLUG-dependent and -independent manners, suggesting a critical role for PDEF in regulating EMT.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.995732273553991,"endowment":2.995732273553991,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21779485","pmcid":"PMC3111250","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2138680323","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NCI NIH HHS","grant_id":"P01 CA078582","title":null},{"funder_name":"NCI NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 CA148772","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":1.3003,"citation_percentile":0.80964184,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":2},{"year":2013,"count":2},{"year":2014,"count":5},{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":1},{"year":2018,"count":2},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2022,"count":2}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1947601911410424","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1947601911410424","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1177/1947601911410424","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21779485","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3111250","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Cancer Cells and Metastasis","Prostate Cancer Treatment and Research","Estrogen and related hormone effects"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Slug","Epithelial–mesenchymal transition","Transcription factor","Suppressor","Cancer research","Metastasis","Regulator","Prostate cancer","Oncology","Cancer","Medicine","Internal medicine","Biology","Gene","Genetics","Breast cancer","Epithelial-to-mesenchymal Transition","Ets Transcription Factors","Pdef"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-09T16:06:10.518536Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
