Drawing on research with Black middle-class parents in England, the article explores the intersecting roles of race, class, and gender in the construction and deployment of dis/ability in education. The author concludes that intersectionality is a vital aspect of understanding race inequity but that racism retains a primacy for critical race scholars in three key ways: namely, empirical primacy (as a central axis of oppression in the everyday reality of schools), personal/autobiographical primacy (as a vital component in how critical race scholars view themselves and their experience of the world), and political primacy (as a point of group coherence and activism).</jats:p>","journal":"Qualitative Inquiry","year":2015,"id":19665,"datarank":11.406800292419906,"base_score":6.163314804034641,"endowment":6.163314804034641,"self_citation_contribution":0.9244972206051963,"citation_network_contribution":10.482303071814709,"self_endowment_contribution":0.9244972206051963,"citer_contribution":10.482303071814709,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":474,"citer_count":200,"citers_with_citation_signal":200,"citers_with_endowment":200,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":132482,"name":"David Gillborn","orcid":null,"position":0,"is_corresponding":false}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":{"has_enrichment":true,"base_score":6.163314804034641,"endowment":6.163314804034641,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21071399","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2320911356","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":64.7997,"citation_percentile":0.99889732,"influential_citations":44,"citation_trend":[{"year":2016,"count":14},{"year":2017,"count":13},{"year":2018,"count":33},{"year":2019,"count":32},{"year":2020,"count":53},{"year":2021,"count":64},{"year":2022,"count":54},{"year":2023,"count":58},{"year":2024,"count":67},{"year":2025,"count":53},{"year":2026,"count":33}],"oa_status":"hybrid","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1177/1077800414557827","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1177/1077800414557827","host_type":"HYBRID"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1177/1077800414557827","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1077800414557827","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full-xml/10.1177/1077800414557827","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://research.birmingham.ac.uk/en/publications/119281e0-5ce7-467a-a627-b4f6d126ef44","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://research.birmingham.ac.uk/portal/en/publications/intersectionality-critical-race-theory-and-the-primacy-of-racism--race-class-gender-and-disability-in-education(119281e0-5ce7-467a-a627-b4f6d126ef44).html","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Critical Race Theory in Education","Critical and Liberation Pedagogy","Diverse Education Studies and Reforms","Sociology","Education"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Intersectionality","Oppression","Racism","Critical race theory","Sociology","Gender studies","Race (biology)","Critical theory","Politics","Epistemology","Political science","Law"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Quality Education"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-06-04T05:16:52.908039Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
