However, the neural basis of these difficulties remains poorly understood. This partly reflects previous failures to differentiate responses during decision making and feedback processing and to take advantage of computational model-based functional MRI (fMRI). METHOD: Participants were 38 community youths ages 10-18 (20 had disruptive behavior disorders, and 18 were healthy comparison youths). Model-based fMRI was used to assess the computational processes involved in decision making and feedback processing in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, insula, and caudate. RESULTS: Youths with disruptive behavior disorders showed reduced use of expected value information within the ventromedial prefrontal cortex when choosing to respond and within the anterior insula when choosing not to respond. In addition, they showed reduced responsiveness to positive prediction errors and increased responsiveness to negative prediction errors within the caudate during feedback. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first to determine impairments in the use of expected value within the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and insula during choice and in prediction error-signaling within the caudate during feedback in youths with disruptive behavior disorders.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":5.087596335232384,"endowment":5.087596335232384,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"23450288","pmcid":"PMC3941772","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1983743123","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Intramural NIH HHS","grant_id":"ZIA MH002860","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIMH NIH HHS","grant_id":"1-ZIA-MH002860-08","title":null},{"funder_name":"Intramural NIH HHS","grant_id":"Z01 MH002860","title":null}],"total_grants":3,"fwci":7.5619,"citation_percentile":0.98089465,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2013,"count":13},{"year":2014,"count":9},{"year":2015,"count":14},{"year":2016,"count":18},{"year":2017,"count":13},{"year":2018,"count":12},{"year":2019,"count":12},{"year":2020,"count":6},{"year":2021,"count":13},{"year":2022,"count":11},{"year":2023,"count":14},{"year":2024,"count":15},{"year":2025,"count":8},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"green","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3941772","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3941772","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.ajp.2012.12060840","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.ajp.2012.12060840","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23450288","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://europepmc.org/articles/PMC3941772","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Neural and Behavioral Psychology Studies","Psychopathy, Forensic Psychiatry, Sexual Offending","Autism Spectrum Disorder Research","Adolescent","Association Learning","Attention","Attention Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders","Avoidance Learning","Brain Mapping","Caudate Nucleus","Cerebral Cortex","Child","Decision Making","Feedback, Psychological","Female","Humans","Image Interpretation, Computer-Assisted","Magnetic Resonance Imaging","Male","Motivation","Neural Pathways","Pattern Recognition, Visual","Prefrontal Cortex","Reward"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Association Learning","Attention","Avoidance Learning","Brain Mapping","Caudate Nucleus","Cerebral Cortex","Child","Decision Making","Female","Humans","Image Interpretation, Computer-Assisted","Magnetic Resonance Imaging","Male","Motivation","Neural Pathways","Pattern Recognition, Visual","Reward","Prefrontal Cortex","Attention Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders","Feedback, Psychological"],"keywords":["Ventromedial prefrontal cortex","Insula","Psychology","Prefrontal cortex","Functional magnetic resonance imaging","Neural correlates of consciousness","Anterior cingulate cortex","Cognitive psychology","Neuroscience","Cognition"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Peace, Justice and strong institutions"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-10T04:25:36.854577Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
