However, the mechanisms that govern the migration of monocytes from bone marrow to blood and from blood to inflamed tissues are not well understood. Here we report that CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) is highly expressed on a subpopulation of blood monocytes whose numbers are markedly decreased in CCR2(-/-) mice. In bone marrow, however, CCR2(-/-) mice had an increased number of monocytes, suggesting that CCR2 is critical for monocyte egress. Intravenous infusion of ex vivo-labeled WT or CCR2(-/-) bone marrow into WT recipient mice demonstrated that CCR2 is necessary for efficient monocyte recruitment from the blood to inflamed tissue. Analysis of mice lacking monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), MCP-3, MCP-5, or MCP-2 plus MCP-5 revealed that MCP-3 and MCP-1 are the CCR2 agonists most critical for the maintenance of normal blood monocyte counts. These findings provide evidence that CCR2 and MCP-3/MCP-1 are critical for monocyte mobilization and suggest new roles for monocyte chemoattractants in leukocyte homeostasis.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":7.0317412587631285,"endowment":7.0317412587631285,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"17364026","pmcid":"PMC1810572","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2010472544","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NHLBI NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 HL063894","title":null},{"funder_name":"NHLBI NIH HHS","grant_id":"5R01 HL52773-12","title":null},{"funder_name":"NHLBI NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 HL63894-07","title":null},{"funder_name":"NHLBI NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 HL052773","title":null}],"total_grants":4,"fwci":21.8619,"citation_percentile":0.9972895,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":55},{"year":2013,"count":68},{"year":2014,"count":65},{"year":2015,"count":57},{"year":2016,"count":79},{"year":2017,"count":65},{"year":2018,"count":54},{"year":2019,"count":46},{"year":2020,"count":59},{"year":2021,"count":61},{"year":2022,"count":73},{"year":2023,"count":59},{"year":2024,"count":79},{"year":2025,"count":59},{"year":2026,"count":32}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"http://www.jci.org/articles/view/29919/files/pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"http://www.jci.org/articles/view/29919/files/pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1172/jci29919","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17364026","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/1810572","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Chemokine receptors and signaling","Immune cells in cancer","Immune Response and Inflammation","Adoptive Transfer","Animals","Blood Cell Count","Bone Marrow Cells","Bone Marrow Transplantation","Chemokine CCL7","Chemokines","Humans","Inflammation","Mice","Mice, Knockout","Monocyte Chemoattractant Proteins","Monocytes","Polymorphism, Genetic","Receptors, CCR2","Receptors, Chemokine"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Blood Cell Count","Bone Marrow Cells","Humans","Inflammation","Monocytes","Polymorphism, Genetic","Bone Marrow Transplantation","Mice, Knockout","Chemokines","Monocyte Chemoattractant Proteins","Adoptive Transfer","Receptors, Chemokine","Mice","Receptors, CCR2","Chemokine CCL7"],"keywords":["CCR2","Monocyte","Chemokine","Bone marrow","CC chemokine receptors","Chemokine receptor","CCL2","Inflammation","Immunology","Chemotaxis","Medicine","Biology","Receptor","Internal medicine"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-28T16:30:09.548664Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
