However, ANOVA cannot provide detailed information on differences among the various study groups, or on complex combinations of study groups. To fully understand group differences in an ANOVA, researchers must conduct tests of the differences between particular pairs of experimental and control groups. Tests conducted on subsets of data tested previously in another analysis are called post hoc tests. A class of post hoc tests that provide this type of detailed information for ANOVA results are called \"multiple comparison analysis\" tests. The most commonly used multiple comparison analysis statistics include the following tests: Tukey, Newman-Keuls, Scheffee, Bonferroni and Dunnett. These statistical tools each have specific uses, advantages and disadvantages. Some are best used for testing theory while others are useful in generating new theory. Selection of the appropriate post hoc test will provide researchers with the most detailed information while limiting Type 1 errors due to alpha inflation.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":6.274762021241939,"endowment":6.274762021241939,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"22420233","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2079761222","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":3.6601,"citation_percentile":0.92312338,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":7},{"year":2013,"count":4},{"year":2014,"count":10},{"year":2015,"count":4},{"year":2016,"count":10},{"year":2017,"count":15},{"year":2018,"count":27},{"year":2019,"count":39},{"year":2020,"count":50},{"year":2021,"count":70},{"year":2022,"count":60},{"year":2023,"count":62},{"year":2024,"count":72},{"year":2025,"count":71},{"year":2026,"count":29}],"oa_status":"gold","license":"cc-by","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.biochemia-medica.com/assets/images/upload/xml_tif/McHugh_ML_-Multiple_comparison_analysis_testing_in_ANOVA.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://www.biochemia-medica.com/assets/images/upload/xml_tif/McHugh_ML_-Multiple_comparison_analysis_testing_in_ANOVA.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://www.biochemia-medica.com/en/journal/21/3/10.11613/BM.2011.029","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.11613/bm.2011.029","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22420233","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hrcak.srce.hr/72939","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Solar and Space Plasma Dynamics","Analysis of Variance","Biostatistics","Data Interpretation, Statistical","Epidemiologic Methods","Humans","Matched-Pair Analysis"],"mesh_terms":["Analysis of Variance","Data Interpretation, Statistical","Epidemiologic Methods","Humans","Matched-Pair Analysis","Biostatistics"],"keywords":["Analysis of variance","Post hoc","Bonferroni correction","Multiple comparisons problem","Post-hoc analysis","Mixed-design analysis of variance","Statistics","Statistical hypothesis testing","Type I and type II errors","One-way analysis of variance","Statistical analysis","Scheffé's method","Repeated measures design","Tukey's range test","Mathematics","Computer science","Medicine"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Decent work and economic growth"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-05T23:50:38.638777Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
