{"doi":"10.1161/jaha.122.028869","title":"Trends in Spending and Claims for P2Y12 Inhibitors by Medicare and Medicaid From 2015 to 2020","abstract":"2Y12 inhibitors (P2Y12is) are antiplatelet agents used in management of patients with atherosclerosis. The P2Y12is prasugrel and ticagrelor have more potent antiplatelet effects than clopidogrel and lead to lower rates of major adverse cardiovascular events and are therefore generally recommended over clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndrome. n a recent randomized clinical trial, prasugrel also decreased major adverse outcomes compared with ticagrelor with no difference in bleeding. Ticagrelor remains available only as a brand-name medication, whereas clopidogrel became generic in 2012 and prasugrel became generic in 2017. Generic medications can result in substantial cost reductions for patients and payers, although the impact of generic P2Y12i availability on total health care spending is unknown.
