Specifically, we hypothesize that users with different levels of domain knowledge prefer different types of PE. While domain experts reported higher satisfaction and perceived usefulness with attribute-based PE (i.e., indicating preference levels for the domain-related attributes), novices preferred case-based PE (i.e., indicating the preference for specific examples, from which attribute-preferences can then be implicitly calculated). The paper discusses the decision-theoretical principles that are believed to lead to this distinction, as well as an experiment that provides substantial evidence for the hypothesis. Consequently, we introduce the idea of adapting the method of PE to users' domain knowledge on the fly using click stream data.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.784189633918261,"endowment":3.784189633918261,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"19162232","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1979280215","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"European Commission","grant_id":"215006","title":"Dynamic Personalization of Multimedia"}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":13.8919,"citation_percentile":0.99221184,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":2},{"year":2013,"count":3},{"year":2014,"count":2},{"year":2015,"count":1},{"year":2016,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":3},{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":1},{"year":2021,"count":5},{"year":2022,"count":4},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":2},{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://www.acm.org/publications/policies/copyright_policy#Background","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/1639714.1639793","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/1639714.1639793","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1145/1639714.1639793","host_type":""},{"url":"https://research.tue.nl/en/publications/52d43a36-6663-4f5e-86d3-4a2d0d0deb85","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://library.tue.nl/csp/dare/LinkToRepository.csp?recordnumber=667814","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://repository.tue.nl/667814","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://research.tue.nl/nl/publications/52d43a36-6663-4f5e-86d3-4a2d0d0deb85","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1639714.1639793","host_type":""},{"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1639714.1639793","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Consumer Market Behavior and Pricing","Decision-Making and Behavioral Economics","Digital Marketing and Social Media","0202 electrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineering","02 engineering and technology"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Preference","Recommender system","Computer science","Preference elicitation","Domain (mathematical analysis)","User satisfaction","Information retrieval","Human–computer interaction","Domain knowledge","Information overload","Knowledge management","World Wide Web","Mathematics"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Peace, Justice and strong institutions"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-16T02:36:53.287459Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
