METHODS: Mild elevation of IOP was induced in rats by intracameral injection of India ink and subsequent laser trabecular photocoagulation. IOP was measured before the surgical procedures and weekly thereafter. Timolol (0.5%), timolol XE (0.5%), dorzolamide (1%), and artificial tears (vehicle) were topically applied daily. Retinal sections were prepared for histology to determine RGC number. RESULTS: Timolol, timolol XE, and dorzolamide induced a significant reduction in IOP (p<0.05) and counteracted the reduction in RGC number that occurred in vehicle treated glaucomatous eyes (p<0.05). The coefficient of correlation between RGC number and IOP was significant in the dorzolamide treated group (r = -0.908, p<0.005), but not in other groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both timolol formulation and dorzolamide reduced IOP and protected RGCs in a rat model of experimental glaucoma. It cannot be ruled out that timolol might protect RGCs by additional mechanisms other than simply lowering of IOP.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.5553480614894135,"endowment":3.5553480614894135,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"15774933","pmcid":"PMC1772601","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1970476186","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.9247,"citation_percentile":0.85687229,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":2},{"year":2013,"count":1},{"year":2014,"count":2},{"year":2015,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":1},{"year":2020,"count":3},{"year":2021,"count":2},{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":3},{"year":2024,"count":4},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://bjo.bmj.com/content/bjophthalmol/89/4/504.full.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://bjo.bmj.com/content/bjophthalmol/89/4/504.full.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://syndication.highwire.org/content/doi/10.1136/bjo.2004.052860","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1136/bjo.2004.052860","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15774933","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/1772601","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://bjo.bmj.com/cgi/content/short/89/4/504","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Glaucoma and retinal disorders","Retinal and Macular Surgery","Retinal Diseases and Treatments"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Antihypertensive Agents","Cell Count","Cell Survival","Disease Models, Animal","Glaucoma","Intraocular Pressure","Male","Ophthalmic Solutions","Retinal Ganglion Cells","Sulfonamides","Thiophenes","Timolol","Rats, Wistar","Cytoprotection","Rats"],"keywords":["Dorzolamide","Timolol","Glaucoma","Intraocular pressure","Ophthalmology","Medicine","Ocular hypertension","Retinal","Ganglion","Anesthesia","Anatomy"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-17T20:17:13.974082Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
