Only a single copy of the rna gene is present on the E. coli chromosome. Although cells with as much as a 100-fold increase in RNase I activity were constructed, little effect on cell growth was observed. Overexpressed RNase I was found in the periplasmic space to the same degree (approximately 85%) as wild-type enzyme, suggesting no limitation in RNase I transport. The rna clone was used to identify a deletion strain totally lacking the rna gene. The normal growth of this strain showed that RNase I is not essential for cell viability. Extracts from the RNase I deletion strain still retained a low level of RNase activity in the presence of EDTA, conclusively demonstrating the existence of additional EDTA-active RNases in E. coli. The possibility of a RNase I inhibitor is also discussed.</jats:p>","journal":"Journal of Bacteriology","year":1990,"id":45832,"datarank":2.245399900884673,"base_score":3.7612001156935624,"endowment":3.7612001156935624,"self_citation_contribution":0.5641800173540344,"citation_network_contribution":1.6812198835306387,"self_endowment_contribution":0.5641800173540344,"citer_contribution":1.6812198835306387,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":42,"citer_count":34,"citers_with_citation_signal":31,"citers_with_endowment":31,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":null,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":null,"fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":213463,"name":"T Gangopadhyay","orcid":null,"position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":213464,"name":"K P Padmanabha","orcid":null,"position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":136612,"name":"M P Deutscher","orcid":null,"position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":213462,"name":"L Q Zhu","orcid":null,"position":0,"is_corresponding":false}],"reference_count":0,"raw_metadata":{"has_enrichment":true,"base_score":3.7612001156935624,"endowment":3.7612001156935624,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"2188952","pmcid":"PMC209119","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2156756059","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIGMS NIH HHS","grant_id":"GM-16317","title":null}],"total_grants":1,"fwci":2.1137,"citation_percentile":0.88391011,"influential_citations":2,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":3},{"year":2018,"count":1},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2021,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2025,"count":1}],"oa_status":"green","license":"https://journals.asm.org/non-commercial-tdm-license","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/209119","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/pmc209119?pdf=render","host_type":"GREEN"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/209119","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://journals.asm.org/doi/pdf/10.1128/jb.172.6.3146-3151.1990","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1128/jb.172.6.3146-3151.1990","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2188952","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Bacterial Genetics and Biotechnology","RNA and protein synthesis mechanisms","Bacteriophages and microbial interactions","Medicine","Biology","Chemistry","Chromosome Deletion","Cloning, Molecular","Escherichia coli","Gene Expression","Genes, Bacterial","Ribonuclease, Pancreatic"],"mesh_terms":["Chromosome Deletion","Cloning, Molecular","Escherichia coli","Genes, Bacterial","Ribonuclease, Pancreatic","Gene Expression"],"keywords":["RNase MRP","Biology","RNase P","RNase H","RNA","Periplasmic space","Molecular biology","Escherichia coli","RNase PH","Ribonuclease III","Degradosome","Non-coding RNA","Gene","Nuclease protection assay","Biochemistry","RNA interference"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Life in Land"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-04T07:03:05.733382Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
