{"doi":"10.1128/aem.06723-11","title":"Swimming Behavior of Selected Species of Archaea","abstract":"<jats:title>ABSTRACT</jats:title>\n          <jats:p>\n            The swimming behavior of\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Bacteria</jats:named-content>\n            has been studied extensively, at least for some species like\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Escherichia coli</jats:named-content>\n            . In contrast, almost no data have been published for\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Archaea</jats:named-content>\n            on this topic. In a systematic study we asked how the archaeal model organisms\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Halobacterium salinarum</jats:named-content>\n            ,\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Methanococcus voltae</jats:named-content>\n            ,\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Methanococcus maripaludis</jats:named-content>\n            ,\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Methanocaldococcus jannaschii</jats:named-content>\n            ,\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Methanocaldococcus villosus</jats:named-content>\n            ,\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Pyrococcus furiosus</jats:named-content>\n            , and\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Sulfolobus acidocaldarius</jats:named-content>\n            swim and which swimming behavior they exhibit. The two\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Euryarchaeota M. jannaschii</jats:named-content>\n            and\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">M. villosus</jats:named-content>\n            were found to be, by far, the fastest organisms reported up to now, if speed is measured in bodies per second (bps). Their swimming speeds, at close to 400 and 500 bps, are much higher than the speed of the bacterium\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">E. coli</jats:named-content>\n            or of a very fast animal, like the cheetah, each with a speed of ca. 20 bps. In addition, we observed that two different swimming modes are used by some\n            <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Archaea</jats:named-content>\n            . They either swim very rapidly, in a more or less straight line, or they exhibit a slower kind of zigzag swimming behavior if cells are in close proximity to the surface of the glass capillary used for observation.
