These genes have been employed in determinations of\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">V. parahaemolyticus</jats:named-content>\n                    population numbers and the prevalence of pathogenic\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">V. parahaemolyticus</jats:named-content>\n                    strains. Strains of the\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Vibrionaceae</jats:named-content>\n                    species\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Photobacterium damselae</jats:named-content>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Vibrio diabolicus</jats:named-content>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Vibrio harveyi</jats:named-content>\n                    , and\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Vibrio natriegens</jats:named-content>\n                    , as well as strains similar to\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">Vibrio tubiashii</jats:named-content>\n                    , were isolated from a pristine salt marsh estuary. These strains were examined for the\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">V. parahaemolyticus</jats:named-content>\n                    hemolysin genes\n                    <jats:italic>tdh</jats:italic>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:italic>trh</jats:italic>\n                    , and\n                    <jats:italic>tlh</jats:italic>\n                    and for the\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">V. parahaemolyticus</jats:named-content>\n                    type III secretion system 2α gene\n                    <jats:italic>vscC2</jats:italic>\n                    using established PCR primers and protocols. Virulence-related genes occurred at high frequencies in non-\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">V. parahaemolyticus Vibrionaceae</jats:named-content>\n                    species.\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">V. diabolicus</jats:named-content>\n                    was of particular interest, as several strains were recovered, and the large majority (&gt;83%) contained virulence-related genes. It is clear that detection of these genes does not ensure correct identification of virulent\n                    <jats:named-content content-type=\"genus-species\">V. parahaemolyticus</jats:named-content>\n                    .
