Therefore, it is adopted by international video coding standards, CCITT H.261 and ISO MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the motion estimation techniques that are pertinent to video coding standards. Three popular groups of motion estimation methods are presented: i) block matching methods, ii) differential (gradient) methods, and iii) Fourier methods. However, not all of them are suitable for the block-based motion compensation structure specified by the aforementioned standards. Our focus in this paper is to review those techniques that would fit into the standards. In addition to the basic operations of these techniques, issues discussed are their extensions, their performance limit, their relationships with each other, and the other advantages or disadvantages of these methods.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":1.791759469228055,"endowment":1.791759469228055,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21097893","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2729850138","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.42233857,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2013,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1117/12.227965","host_type":"journal"}],"fields_of_study":["Video Coding and Compression Technologies","Advanced Image Processing Techniques","Advanced Vision and Imaging"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Computer science","Motion compensation","Quarter-pixel motion","Motion estimation","Inter frame","Block-matching algorithm","Computer vision","Coding (social sciences)","Artificial intelligence","Multiview Video Coding","Reference frame","Video tracking","Video processing","Frame (networking)","Telecommunications","Mathematics"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-17T14:35:56.325779Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
