{"doi":"10.1115/dmd2025-1078","title":"Manual Precision Control Handle Device To Manipulate A Tendon-Driven Active Needle In Minimally Invasive Procedures","abstract":"Abstract Several minimally invasive procedures such as brachytherapy are performed percutaneously using needles. For procedures such as high-dose-rate brachytherapy, multiple needles are inserted simultaneously, and radiation sources are guided through to the cancerous tissue location. Recent studies have shown that active steerable needles could provide actuation and control for improved needle navigation and targeting inside tissue. Our group has previously developed a tendon-driven active needle (TDAN) that features a flexure “notched” section for improved flexibility, actuated by two internal tendons. This work presents a manual handheld precision control handle device to manipulate the needle tip. A user-friendly and compact articulate control knob is designed, fabricated, and installed on a handle offering precise manipulation and manual control.
