{"doi":"10.1111/jicd.12003","title":"Comparison of red blood cell parameters in smokers and nonsmokers with chronic periodontitis","abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:sec><jats:title>Objective</jats:title><jats:p>Recent studies suggest that chronic periodontitis can lead to a decrease in levels of red blood cell (<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">RBC</jats:styled-content>) and hemoglobin concentration. Smoking is an established risk factor for periodontitis. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoking on the various parameters of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">RBC</jats:styled-content> in the subjects with chronic periodontitis.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods</jats:title><jats:p>A total of 77 males with chronic periodontitis were divided into 38 nonsmokers (group I) and 39 current smokers (group <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">II</jats:styled-content>). Clinical parameters recorded were probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level. Laboratory blood investigations included hemoglobin concentration, <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">RBC</jats:styled-content> count, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.</jats:p></jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results</jats:title><jats:p>In group <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">II</jats:styled-content> probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were significantly higher than in group <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">I</jats:styled-content>. The <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">RBC</jats:styled-content> count, hemoglobin concentration, and packed cell volume were significantly lower in group <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">II</jats:styled-content> compared to group <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">I</jats:styled-content>.
