{"doi":"10.1111/j.1751-1097.1967.tb08794.x","title":"DIRECT DEMONSTRATION OF THE MONOMERIZATION OF THYMINE‐CONTAINING DIMERS IN U.V.‐IRRADIATED DNA BY YEAST PHOTOREACTIVATING ENZYME AND LIGHT*","abstract":"<jats:p><jats:bold>Abstract—</jats:bold> Ultraviolet‐irradiated <jats:italic>E. coli</jats:italic> DNA (<jats:sup>3</jats:sup>H‐thymine‐labelled) was mixed with un‐irradiated <jats:italic>E. coli</jats:italic> DNA (<jats:sup>14</jats:sup>C‐thymine‐labelled) and exposed to light in the presence of purified yeast photoreactivating enzyme. As the <jats:sup>3</jats:sup>H‐thymine‐containing cyclobutane dimers disappeared during the photoreactivation, there was a stoichiometric increase of monomeric <jats:sup>3</jats:sup>H‐thymine as determined from the <jats:sup>3</jats:sup>H/<jats:sup>14</jats:sup>C ratio in thymine.
