The major side-effect of PDT is the pain experienced during treatment. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether nerve blocks could provide adequate pain relief during PDT of AKs on the forehead and scalp. METHODS: Ten men with symmetrically distributed and extensive AKs on the forehead and scalp were included in the study. Prior to PDT one side of the forehead and scalp was anaesthetized by nerve blocks while the other side served as control. RESULTS: The mean visual analogue scale (VAS) score on the anaesthetized side was 1 compared with 6.4 on the nonanaesthetized side during PDT. This difference was significant (P<0.0001), implying that nerve blocks reduce VAS scores during PDT. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study support the use of nerve blocks as pain relief during PDT of field cancerization on the forehead and scalp, although individual considerations must be taken into account to find the most adequate pain-relieving method for each patient.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.418840607796598,"endowment":4.418840607796598,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"19210497","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2105830806","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":6.6217,"citation_percentile":0.9717576,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2012,"count":7},{"year":2013,"count":7},{"year":2014,"count":9},{"year":2015,"count":6},{"year":2016,"count":3},{"year":2017,"count":3},{"year":2018,"count":7},{"year":2019,"count":3},{"year":2020,"count":2},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":5},{"year":2024,"count":2},{"year":2025,"count":3}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"http://doi.wiley.com/10.1002/tdm_license_1.1","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.wiley.com/onlinelibrary/tdm/v1/articles/10.1111%2Fj.1365-2133.2008.09024.x","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/wol1/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2133.2008.09024.x/fullpdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2133.2008.09024.x","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19210497","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Photodynamic Therapy Research Studies","Oral health in cancer treatment","Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Studies"],"mesh_terms":["Aged","Aged, 80 and over","Facial Dermatoses","Forehead","Humans","Male","Nerve Block","Pain Measurement","Photochemotherapy","Scalp Dermatoses","Treatment Outcome","Keratosis, Actinic"],"keywords":["Forehead","Scalp","Field cancerization","Medicine","Photodynamic therapy","Dermatology","Anesthesia","Surgery","Internal medicine","Cancer"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-11T07:28:48.933319Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
