Vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT) might be an alternative for the treatment of PWS. OBJECTIVES: To compare clinical outcomes of PDT and PDL treatment of PWS. METHODS: Two adjacent flat areas of PWS lesions were selected from each of 15 patients (two male and 13 female; age 11-36 years) and randomly assigned to either single-session PDL or PDT. PDL was delivered using a 585-nm pulsed laser. PDT was carried out with a combination of haematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) and a low-power copper vapour laser (510.6 and 578.2 nm). Clinical outcomes were evaluated colorimetrically and visually during follow-up. RESULTS: A total of nine red PWS lesions and six purple PWS lesions were treated. For red PWS, colorimetric assessment showed that the blanching rates of PDL and PDT at 2 months ranged from -11% to 24% and 22% to 55%, respectively. For purple PWS, blanching rates of PDL and PDT ranged from 8% to 33% and 30% to 45%, respectively. Overall, there was a significant difference between the blanching effect of single-session PDL treatment and a single-session PDT treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This side-by-side comparison demonstrates that PDT is at least as effective as PDL and, in some cases, superior. The true value of PDT for the treatment of PWS deserves further investigation.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.709530201312334,"endowment":4.709530201312334,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"23137063","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W1917838866","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":5.7228,"citation_percentile":0.95934896,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2013,"count":3},{"year":2014,"count":10},{"year":2015,"count":4},{"year":2016,"count":8},{"year":2017,"count":7},{"year":2018,"count":3},{"year":2019,"count":5},{"year":2020,"count":6},{"year":2021,"count":10},{"year":2022,"count":7},{"year":2023,"count":15},{"year":2024,"count":11},{"year":2025,"count":16},{"year":2026,"count":4}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"http://doi.wiley.com/10.1002/tdm_license_1.1","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://api.wiley.com/onlinelibrary/tdm/v1/articles/10.1111%2Fbjd.12130","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/wol1/doi/10.1111/bjd.12130/fullpdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1111/bjd.12130","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23137063","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Dermatologic Treatments and Research","Photodynamic Therapy Research Studies","Laser Applications in Dentistry and Medicine","Adolescent","Adult","Child","Female","Hematoporphyrin Photoradiation","Hematoporphyrins","Humans","Lasers, Dye","Lasers, Gas","Low-Level Light Therapy","Male","Port-Wine Stain","Treatment Outcome","Young Adult"],"mesh_terms":["Adolescent","Adult","Child","Female","Hematoporphyrin Photoradiation","Hematoporphyrins","Humans","Male","Treatment Outcome","Port-Wine Stain","Low-Level Light Therapy","Lasers, Gas","Lasers, Dye","Young Adult"],"keywords":["Port-wine stain","Birthmark","Photodynamic therapy","Medicine","Port wine","Blanching","Dye laser","Dermatology","Nuclear medicine","Surgery","Laser","Optics"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":0,"sdg_label":"Good health and well-being"}],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-18T15:47:15.100190Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
