However, there are several challenges that prevent the widespread implementation of deep learning algorithms in actual clinical settings, including unclear prediction confidence and limited training data for new T1D subjects. To this end, we propose a novel deep learning framework, Fast-adaptive and Confident Neural Network (FCNN), to meet these clinical challenges. In particular, an attention-based recurrent neural network is used to learn representations from CGM input and forward a weighted sum of hidden states to an evidential output layer, aiming to compute personalized BG predictions with theoretically supported model confidence. The model-agnostic meta-learning is employed to enable fast adaptation for a new T1D subject with limited training data. The proposed framework has been validated on three clinical datasets. In particular, for a dataset including 12 subjects with T1D, FCNN achieved a root mean square error of 18.64±2.60 mg/dL and 31.07±3.62 mg/dL for 30 and 60-minute prediction horizons, respectively, which outperformed all the considered baseline methods with significant improvements. These results indicate that FCNN is a viable and effective approach for predicting BG levels in T1D. The well-trained models can be implemented in smartphone apps to improve glycemic control by enabling proactive actions through real-time glucose alerts.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.875197323201151,"endowment":4.875197323201151,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"35776825","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4283785752","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council","grant_id":"EP/P00993X/1","title":"ARISES: An Adaptive, Real-time, Intelligent System to Enhance Self-care of chronic disease"},{"funder_name":"Imperial College London","grant_id":"","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":13.436,"citation_percentile":0.99268251,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":18},{"year":2024,"count":33},{"year":2025,"count":55},{"year":2026,"count":23}],"oa_status":"green","license":"IEEE Copyright","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10152256/1/Personalized_Blood_Glucose_Prediction_for_Type_1_Diabetes_Using_Evidential_Deep_Learning_and_Meta-Learning.pdf","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10152256/1/Personalized_Blood_Glucose_Prediction_for_Type_1_Diabetes_Using_Evidential_Deep_Learning_and_Meta-Learning.pdf","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://xplorestaging.ieee.org/ielx7/10/9998557/09813400.pdf?arnumber=9813400","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/10152256/","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1109/tbme.2022.3187703","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35776825","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/publications/a6447d3a-0397-4ebc-9eb2-205ab7df33e1","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.scopus.com/pages/publications/85133785219","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/98551","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1109/TBME.2022.3187703","host_type":""},{"url":"https://discovery-pp.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/10152256/","host_type":""},{"url":"https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.1109/TBME.2022.3187703","host_type":""}],"fields_of_study":["Diabetes Management and Research","ECG Monitoring and Analysis","Hyperglycemia and glycemic control in critically ill and hospitalized patients","03 medical and health sciences","0302 clinical medicine","0202 electrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineering","02 engineering and technology","Blood Glucose","Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1","Deep Learning","Humans"],"mesh_terms":["Deep Learning","Blood Glucose","Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1","Humans"],"keywords":["Artificial intelligence","Machine learning","Computer science","Deep learning","Artificial neural network","Mean squared error","Personalized medicine","Glycemic","Adaptation (eye)","Diabetes mellitus","Bioinformatics","Medicine","Mathematics","Statistics","Blood Glucose","Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1","616","610","Humans"],"sdg_mappings":[{"sdg_number":3,"sdg_label":"3.
