{"doi":"10.1109/ppps56198.2025.11248536","title":"Radially Outward and Inward Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Devices for Biological Applications","abstract":"Bacterial biofilms are a major cause of foodborne illness which is estimated to be 48 million cases each year, resulting in about 3,000 deaths. Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAP) based treatment is a non-invasive and non-chemical method to sanitize food processing surfaces and medical equipment. In this work, a radially outward CAP device is demonstrated to sanitize nonplanar surfaces, such as the inside of a pipe. The devices are composed of a 3-element dielectric barrier discharge CAP array with an outer diameter of 31.5 mm. The device is fabricated using Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic(LTCC)<sup xmlns:mml=\"http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">1</sup> and operates at <tex xmlns:mml=\"http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">$20 \\text{kHz}, \\sim 1 \\text{kVrms}$</tex>, and 5 mArms using an Ar gas. Experiments were carried out to inactivate Ps. aeruginosa bacteria biofilm grown inside plastic pipes with inserts that contained the biofilm. The CAP treatment was carried out for 10 minutes using <tex xmlns:mml=\"http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\">$\\text{Ar}+\\mathrm{O}_{2}$</tex> gas mix where the flow rate was 5 lpm. The results, performed in triplicate, showed an inactivation of 98% after the treatment. These results and device fabrication and operation will be described. A radially inward CAP array device has also developed with a potential application to sanitize curved surfaces such as door handles, table edges, or medical instruments. This CAP device is also a 3-element array and has an inner radius of 12 mm. This inward device operates at voltage of 0.9 kVrms, current of 3 mArms, and an Ar flow rate of 5 lpm. Experiments using this device are being conducted and results will be presented.
