{"doi":"10.1109/jsen.2025.3551258","title":"Study of Aberrations in Transcranial Photoacoustic Imaging Using μCT Images of Skull: A Simulation Study","abstract":"Distortions caused by the presence of skull remain a barrier to the use of photoacoustic imaging (PAI) for accurate functional mapping of the human brain. Many have tried to understand this problem by the use of computationally designed skull models, but these efforts have largely failed to predict acoustic distortions with any precision, likely because they are lacking key geometric and material features. Here, we develop simulations that enable us to observe the path of intracranially generated acoustic signals utilizing a model of the human skull which has been generated via micro-computed tomography (<inline-formula xmlns:mml=\"http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML\" xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\"> <tex-math notation=\"LaTeX\">$\\mu $ </tex-math></inline-formula>CT) of actual human skull bone. The implementation of real skull geometry reflects experimental conditions, where attenuation, distortion, and signal reverberation occur during acoustic propagation caused by the presence of porosity and changes in geometric shape. In this article, we begin by analyzing the acoustic signals received after propagating through the skull in 2-D simulations. We then extended our investigation to 3-D simulations, performing transcranial imaging using various skull models to further study the effects of realistic skull representations on reconstructed images. By accounting for the heterogeneity of the skull, we examine the influence of each model on the photoacoustic signal in greater detail. In addition, aberration correction proved significantly more challenging for the micro-CT-derived model, underscoring the limitations of previously used models.","journal":"IEEE Sensors Journal","year":2025,"id":531215,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":4,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9607,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2025-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":893865,"name":"Ravi Prakash","orcid":"0000-0001-6337-418X","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":868643,"name":"Seyed Mohsen Ranjbaran","orcid":"0000-0002-9126-169X","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":271093,"name":"Rayyan Manwar","orcid":"0000-0002-8550-8932","position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":271094,"name":"Kamran Avanaki","orcid":"0000-0002-1437-8456","position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":865128,"name":"Loïc Saint‐Martin","orcid":"0000-0002-3449-2694","position":0,"is_corresponding":true}],"reference_count":62,"raw_metadata":null,"created_at":"2026-07-19T02:51:14.579161Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
