{"doi":"10.1109/ius46767.2020.9251366","title":"Focused ultrasound median nerve stimulation can modulate nociceptive pain","abstract":"Current treatments for neuropathic pain, such as pharmaceuticals and electrical stimulation, have large trade-offs in specificity and the need for surgical interventions. Moreover, these treatments have variable effectiveness and may only work in select populations of patients. Here we explore the use of focused ultrasound (FUS) for mitigating pain in healthy subjects. Nociceptive pain was induced using a custom heating probe and FUS was applied upstream to the median nerve. Our results show that pain ratings were reduced by a maximum of 1.4 units of pain from FUS vs sham stimuli. Moreover, a minimum amount of displacement was observed for pain the reduction.
