This is a new phenomenon. Why has it happened? Who is behind it and what motivates these bodies to offer certification? Is it a good idea? This paper attempts to provide an overview of the different reasons for certification, different certification bodies and their approach to certification, and the implications for academic programs offering degrees in engineering management.
