As we play the numbers game invain, we are left wondering how many genes are reallyencrypted in its sequence, and what the biological roles ofthe rest of the genome, comprising mostly noncoding sequences, may be. Only ~5% of the genome is predicted toencode proteins and ~45% is considered \"junk DNA\" dueto old retroviral contaminations. In general, we have minimal substantiated evidence on the biological functions ofthe remaining ~50% of the genome that consists of noncoding sequences. Identifying all the protein-coding sequences, as well as decoding the noncoding portion of thehuman genome, is an enormous obstacle to overcome...","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":1.0986122886681096,"endowment":1.0986122886681096,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"15338628","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2143467952","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[],"oa_status":"closed","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://syndication.highwire.org/content/doi/10.1101/sqb.2003.68.283","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1101/sqb.2003.68.283","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15338628","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Chromosomal and Genetic Variations","Genomics and Phylogenetic Studies","RNA and protein synthesis mechanisms","Animals","Databases, Nucleic Acid","Genome, Human","Genomics","Humans","Internet","Phylogeny","Sequence Alignment","Software","Species Specificity","Vertebrates"],"mesh_terms":["Animals","Humans","Phylogeny","Software","Species Specificity","Vertebrates","Genome, Human","Sequence Alignment","Internet","Genomics","Databases, Nucleic Acid"],"keywords":["Genome","Human genome","Biology","Noncoding DNA","Genetics","Gene","Computational biology","ENCODE","Genome project","Whole genome sequencing","Reference genome","DNA sequencing"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-16T08:09:41.930387Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
