Identification of the neurobiological processes that regulate energy balance will facilitate development of interventions for these disorders. Here we show that the Neurotensin-expressing neurons in the mouse IPAC (IPAC Nts ), a nucleus of the central extended amygdala, bidirectionally coordinate hedonic feeding and physical activity, thereby regulating energy balance, metabolic processes and bodyweight. IPAC Nts are preferentially activated by consumption of highly palatable food or exposure to its taste and smell. Activating IPAC Nts promotes food intake in a palatability-dependent manner and decreases locomotion. Conversely, inhibiting IPAC Nts selectively reduces palatable food intake and dramatically enhances physical activity and energy expenditure, and in parallel stimulates physiological responses that oppose diet-induced obesity and metabolic dysfunctions. Thus, a single neuronal population, Neurotensin-expressing neurons in the IPAC, acts to control obesogenic and leptogenic processes by synergistically coordinating energy intake and expenditure with metabolism.","journal":"bioRxiv (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory)","year":2021,"id":221324,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":1,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9515,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2021-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":821339,"name":"Alberto Corona","orcid":"0000-0002-2258-1905","position":1,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":821340,"name":"Sara Boyle","orcid":"0000-0002-1006-7327","position":2,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":815500,"name":"Radhashree Sharma","orcid":"0000-0003-3130-0025","position":3,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":821341,"name":"Rachel Rubino","orcid":"0000-0003-3904-0635","position":4,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":821926,"name":"Jill Habel","orcid":null,"position":5,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":821342,"name":"Eva Gablenz","orcid":"0000-0002-1632-4507","position":6,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":577064,"name":"Jacqueline Giovanniello","orcid":"0000-0002-4558-7728","position":7,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":39709,"name":"Semir Beyaz","orcid":"0000-0003-4730-4012","position":8,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":103965,"name":"Tobias Janowitz","orcid":"0000-0002-7820-3727","position":9,"is_corresponding":false},{"id":821343,"name":"Stephen D.
