This procedure is applied to the PIR database and a dictionary of sequence motifs that relate to specific superfamilies constructed. The motifs have a practical relevance in identifying the membership of specific superfamilies without the need to perform sequence database searches in 20% of newly determined sequences. The sequence motifs identified represent functionally important sites on protein molecules. When multiple blocks exist in a single motif they are often close together in the 3-D structure. Furthermore, occasionally these motif blocks were found to be split by introns when the correlation with exon structures was examined.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":3.8066624897703196,"endowment":3.8066624897703196,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"1438158","pmcid":"PMC7528547","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2019019284","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.6776,"citation_percentile":0.84123176,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2014,"count":1},{"year":2017,"count":1}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/peds/article-pdf/5/6/479/4350663/5-6-479.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/peds/article-pdf/5/6/479/4350663/5-6-479.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://academic.oup.com/peds/article-pdf/5/6/479/4350663/5-6-479.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/protein/5.6.479","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1438158","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC7528547","host_type":"Europe_PMC"},{"url":"https://europepmc.org/articles/PMC7528547?pdf=render","host_type":"Europe_PMC"}],"fields_of_study":["Machine Learning in Bioinformatics","Protein Structure and Dynamics","Fractal and DNA sequence analysis"],"mesh_terms":["Amino Acid Sequence","Multigene Family","Models, Molecular","Molecular Sequence Data","Peptides","Protein Conformation","Databases, Factual","Sequence Homology, Amino Acid"],"keywords":["Sequence motif","Structural motif","Computational biology","Motif (music)","Sequence (biology)","Sequence logo","Sequence alignment","Protein sequencing","Biology","Sequence database","Exon","Intron","Genetics","Peptide sequence","Bioinformatics","Gene","Biochemistry"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-30T07:31:31.356720Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
