{"doi":"10.1093/ppar/prad012","title":"Multi-Sector Collaboration to Support Rural Aging","abstract":"Rural areas, which are home to approximately one in five people in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022), are at the forefront of aging. Rural populations are older than urban populations, on average, and older adults in rural areas are less likely to move, making them more likely to age in place (Henning-Smith, Lahr, Mulcahy, & MacDougall, 2023; Parker et al., 2018; Tuttle et al., 2020). As of 2021, older adults (age 65 and older) make up more than 20% of all rural residents, compared with 16% of urban residents (Davis et al., 2022). Older adults are the fastest-growing age group in rural areas; between 2010 and 2022 the population of older adults in rural areas grew by 22% compared with a decline of nearly 5% among rural adults ages 18–64 (Davis et al., 2022). Altogether, this puts rural areas ahead of the curve when it comes to population aging, and rural areas present several important lessons for supporting aging. Public health systems, aging and social services, and health care all have important roles to play in supporting rural aging.
