A researcher-driven method for assessing diversity and representation in prospective research cohorts","abstract":"Dear Editor, The purpose of research with clinical populations is to further understand health mechanisms, reducing the burden of disease by developing effective treatments. However, the validity of research conclusions is contingent on whether the participant sample represents the population of interest.1 Research samples must balance extensive screening of potential participants with practical and ethical constraints. This is salient for research on health conditions such as pain, because of documented treatment disparities based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic factors, mental health, and family context.2 Additionally, because of the history of eugenic racism in research,3 many people of color are hesitant to participate in research, which problematizes the generalizability of findings, obscures strategies to identify and address inequalities in health care, and minimizes the efficacy and equity of patient care.1,4 It is crucial to acknowledge that, for much of history, minoritized individuals’ health and lives were not valued or considered worthy of study, except in the context of experimentation.
