{"doi":"10.1093/pm/pnac190","title":"Patient Responses to Surgery-relevant Screening for Opioid and Other Risky Substance Use Before Surgery: A Pretest-posttest Study","abstract":"Dear Editor, Opioid and other substance use complicates the care of surgical patients by delaying postoperative recovery, impairing pain relief, and increasing risk of complications [1]. Additional challenges result from unrecognized substance use because surgical patients routinely receive opioid prescriptions before and after surgery [2]. Without knowledge of substance use before surgery, the ability to adequately plan for and manage pain during and after surgery may be compromised. Brief patient-reported questionnaires can efficiently screen for opioid, drug, and alcohol use, but adoption in the perioperative setting has lagged [3]. While several barriers exist, patients do not always perceive how disclosure of risky use may impact and improve their perioperative care and pain management [4]. No study appears to have evaluated patient willingness to answer screening questions prior to their surgical care, versus more general medical and healthcare screening.
