{"doi":"10.1093/ntr/ntae226","title":"How Much Longer Will We Ignore Nondaily Cigarette Smoking?","abstract":"Smoking behavior patterns have evolved substantially over the last two decades in the United States with a marked decline in current use to 11.5% in 2021 from 20.9% in 2005 of adults aged 18 or older.1 Based on the 2022 National Health Interview Survey data on current smokers, 19.7% of White smokers reported nondaily use compared to 38.1% of Latino, 29.8% of African American, and 31% of Asian smokers.2 This divergent pattern in daily or nondaily smoking by race and ethnicity is a trend that has been growing over the past two decades. Despite these observations, the challenges presented by nondaily smoking have been mostly ignored by the tobacco control research community. It is possible that many considered that nondaily smoking causes less harm and by not fitting into the addiction paradigm approach to cessation interventions, there is no clear path to follow to help nondaily smokers quit. However, nondaily smoking does cause cancer and cardiovascular events and merits the collective attention of the tobacco control community. The fact that nondaily smoking is more prevalent among African American, Latino, and Asian individuals implies the existence of a structural inequity in the tobacco control research and cessation services that affect communities of color. This commentary highlights available data on nondaily smoking behavior, its health effects, available cessation strategies, and the potential use of tobacco-specific biomarkers. Our goal is to encourage researchers to focus and generate more evidence on strategies to control nondaily smoking, including assessment of health risks, development of cessation interventions, and evaluation of potential behavioral or biological differences based on demographic and environmental factors.","journal":"Nicotine & Tobacco Research","year":2024,"id":460136,"datarank":0.0,"base_score":0.0,"endowment":0.0,"self_citation_contribution":0.0,"citation_network_contribution":0.0,"self_endowment_contribution":0.0,"citer_contribution":0.0,"corpus_percentile":null,"corpus_rank":null,"citation_count":4,"citer_count":0,"citers_with_citation_signal":0,"citers_with_endowment":0,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_dataset_confidence":0.9543,"is_data_producer":false,"deposit_databanks":null,"is_oa":true,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"2024-01-01","fair_score":null,"fair_percentile":null,"algorithm_id":"datarank_citation_only_1hop_v6","ranking_scope":"data_only","authors":[{"id":107677,"name":"Erik J.
