While it is well recognized that the conservation of genetic information between microbial genomes, combined with the exponential increase in available microbial sequences, can be exploited to increase the efficiency of gap closure, we lack the computational tools to aid in this process. We describe here a new tool, MGView, which was developed to create a graphical depiction of the alignment of a set of microbial contigs against a completed microbial genome. The results of our assembly of the Staphylococcus aureus RF122 genome show that MGView enables a considerable reduction in time and economic cost associated with closure. Together, the results also show that the application of MGView not only enables a reduction in fold-coverage requirements of the random shotgun sequence phase, but also provides interesting insights into differences in gene content and organization between finished and unfinished microbial genomes.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":2.1972245773362196,"endowment":2.1972245773362196,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"12930980","pmcid":"PMC212826","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2130320359","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIGMS NIH HHS","grant_id":"T32 GM008347","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIGMS NIH HHS","grant_id":"GM08347","title":null}],"total_grants":2,"fwci":0.5427,"citation_percentile":0.63308957,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2026,"count":2}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/nar/article-pdf/31/17/e106/4024782/gng107.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/nar/article-pdf/31/17/e106/4024782/gng107.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://academic.oup.com/nar/article-pdf/31/17/e106/4024782/gng107.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/nar/gng107","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12930980","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.527.9115","host_type":""},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/212826","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Genomics and Phylogenetic Studies","Legume Nitrogen Fixing Symbiosis","Plant Pathogenic Bacteria Studies"],"mesh_terms":["Base Sequence","DNA, Bacterial","Molecular Sequence Data","Software","Staphylococcus aureus","Reproducibility of Results","Sequence Alignment","Genome, Bacterial","Sequence Analysis, DNA"],"keywords":["Biology","Genome","Computational biology","Contig","Shotgun sequencing","Metagenomics","Shotgun","Bacterial genome size","Genetics","Gene"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-10T08:53:54.762256Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
