{"doi":"10.1093/mnras/181.3.375","title":"Smoothed particle hydrodynamics: theory and application to non-spherical stars","abstract":"A new hydrodynamic code applicable to a space of an arbitrary number of dimensions is discussed and applied to a variety of polytropic stellar models. The principal feature of the method is the use of statistical techniques to recover analytical expressions for the physical variables from a known distribution of fluid elements. The equations of motion take the form of Newtonian equations for particles. Starting with a non-axisymmetric distribution of approximately 80 particles in three dimensions, the method is found to reproduce the structure of uniformly rotating and magnetic polytropes to within a few per cent. The method may be easily extended to deal with more complicated physical models.","journal":"Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society","year":1977,"id":8590,"datarank":25.71872965120049,"base_score":8.866722667194098,"endowment":8.866722667194098,"self_citation_contribution":1.330008400079115,"citation_network_contribution":24.388721251121375,"self_endowment_contribution":1.330008400079115,"citer_contribution":24.388721251121375,"corpus_percentile":96.4,"corpus_rank":1876,"citation_count":7091,"citer_count":191,"citers_with_citation_signal":191,"citers_with_endowment":191,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"has_version_chain":false,"published_date":"1977-12-01","authors":[{"id":74605,"name":"J.
