{"doi":"10.1093/mictod/qaaf095","title":"How To Estimate the Magnification of a Digital Microscope","abstract":"Abstract Microscope magnification refers to the ability of a microscope to enlarge the image of a small object, revealing details invisible to the naked eye. However, accurately determining magnification—especially in digital microscopes—is more complex than it initially appears and can often be misleading. This article presents a practical means for estimating the magnification of digital microscopes, highlighting the critical distinction between optical magnification, which is linked to the system’s true resolving power, and digital magnification, which enlarges the image without improving resolution. Particular attention is given to configurations that include tube lenses, where the on-sensor magnification (that is, the magnification at the camera sensor) may differ from the nominal optical magnification.
