{"doi":"10.1093/med/9780197584569.003.0295","title":"Anatomy of the Kidney","abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title>\n               <jats:p>Understanding the anatomy of the kidney is critical to understanding its physiology and multiple roles in blood pressure control, fluid and electrolyte balance, as well as other hormonal functions. The kidneys consist of glomeruli and tubules. The glomerulus consists of a network of capillaries that branch from the afferent arteriole. Each tubule consists of proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule, collecting tubule, and ends with the papilla. Each part of the tubule has a distinct function. In addition, the kidney is a very vascular organ.
