{"doi":"10.1093/med/9780197584569.003.0058","title":"Termination of Drug Action","abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title>\n               <jats:p>Termination of a drug’s action usually depends on the drug being pulled from the site of action down a concentration gradient into the blood. Drug clearance from the blood may then occur via biotransformation (enzymatic chemical change to the drug molecule), active efflux, passive elimination, or any combination of the three. Lipophilic drugs can accumulate significantly in peripheral tissues, creating a reservoir that can shorten or lengthen the duration of action depending on the context.
