The foregut initiates and coordinates a series of digestive processes, such as secreting saliva and producing specific digestive enzymes, to ensure an efficient pre-digestion before the ingestion enters subsequent sections of the digestive system. Furthermore, the foregut epithelia interact with microorganisms, both symbionts and pathogens, that are an integrated part of the digestive system. These microorganisms, collectively termed the gut microbiome, can significantly impact intestinal and overall physiology of the organism. Drosophila melanogaster provides a tractable model to better understand general animal physiologies given the fly’s highly conserved genome, cell and tissue organization, and regulatory pathways. This presentation will focus on the adult Drosophila foregut as a model to explore major biological processes within the foregut. High-resolution optical and electron microscopy analyses allowed the differentiation of major foregut cell types, the detailed visualization of foregut-associated extracellular structures, and the observation of specific foregut-microbiome interactions.
