Since then, the technology has gained interest, especially in research fields demanding ultra-high throughput acquisition of image data. At the forefront is the field of Connectomics in Neurobiology which aims at reconstructing large volumes of the brain to understand its structure and function [2, 3]. This large-scale imaging of biological tissue sections was enabled by the development of automated sample preparation techniques [4–7] which has gained momentum in recent years. A different discipline requiring large image data deals with the reconstruction of computer chips for analyzing and identifying potential cybersecurity threats [8, 9]. Downstream data handling and processing of petabyte-scale multi-beam image data now became the next challenge. However, as computational hardware becomes more powerful and affordable while at the same time reconstruction and segmentation algorithms are boosted by new machine learning approaches [10, 11], first results [3, 12, 13] are encouraging.
