{"doi":"10.1093/jtm/taab117","title":"Antimalarial chemoprophylaxis and treatment in the USA: limited access and extreme price variability","abstract":"Despite global declines in malaria, imported cases to the USA have steadily risen, most recently, from 1517 in 2015 to 2161 cases in 2017.1,2 Although chemoprophylaxis is recommended for travellers, it is underutilized, particularly among visiting friends and relatives (VFRs) travellers.3 To assess the role of availability and cost of antimalarials used for chemoprophylaxis and malaria treatment, we surveyed pharmacies in two geographic areas with high rates of malaria; Minneapolis/Saint Paul (MSP) and New York City (NYC). Pharmacy information was obtained from a 2016 US pharmacy registration database (SK&A, QuintilesIMS Company, Danbury, CT). Surveys were conducted through telephone interviews with 138 pharmacies between May and October 2017. Queries included which antimalarials were stocked (on-site) and the out-of-pocket cost (cash price) for 30 tablets/capsules.
