The authors of a recent study1 claim to have found an association between the high consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and an increased risk of lung cancer, after adjusting for other risk factors. I have to confess that my heart rather sank when I was asked my views on this study. That’s not because it’s complicated, and not even because it’s a particularly bad study of its type. It’s just that it’s yet another of a class of studies about UPFs that, in my view, are doing nothing much to advance what is known about associations between the consumption of UPFs and human health. I’m well aware that studies with other kinds of methodology are going on – I just wish that researchers would concentrate more on those other types of research, instead of repeatedly cranking the handle of doing studies like this one.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":0.6931471805599453,"endowment":0.6931471805599453,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"19910364","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W4414843848","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":1.4224,"citation_percentile":0.84476388,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2026,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://academic.oup.com/pages/standard-publication-reuse-rights","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/jrssig/article-pdf/22/6-7/66/64503456/qmaf084.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/jrssig/qmaf084","host_type":"journal"}],"fields_of_study":["Statistics Education and Methodologies"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Series (stratigraphy)","Probability and statistics","Time series","Summary statistics"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-08-04T12:29:13.953290Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
