The purpose of this study was to determine the genes that underwent phase variation during a 6-day period of experimental human nasopharyngeal colonization. METHODS: Strain NTHi 2019Str(R)1 was used to colonize the nasopharynx of human subjects in a study of experimental colonization. Thirteen phase-variable genes were analyzed in NTHi 2019Str(R)1. Samples of NTHi 2019Str(R)1 were cultured from subjects during the 6-day colonization period. We used capillary electrophoresis and Roche 454 pyrosequencing to determine the number of repeats in each gene from each sample. RESULTS: A significant number of samples switched licA and igaB from phase off in the inoculated strain to phase on during the 4-day period of observation. lex2A also showed variability as compared to baseline, but the differences were not significant. The remaining genes showed no evidence of phase variation. CONCLUSIONS: Our studies suggest that the phase-on genotypes of licA and igaB are important for early human nasopharynx colonization. lex2A showed a trend from phase off to phase on, suggesting a potentially important role in the colonization process.","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":4.189654742026425,"endowment":4.189654742026425,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"23715658","pmcid":"PMC3733508","openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2141040405","authors":[],"funders":[{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"AI024616","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"N01 AI030040","title":null},{"funder_name":"NCATS NIH HHS","grant_id":"UL1 TR000442","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"R37 AI024616","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"R56 AI024616","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"R01 AI024616","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIAID NIH HHS","grant_id":"AI30040","title":null},{"funder_name":"NIEHS NIH HHS","grant_id":"P30 ES005605","title":null},{"funder_name":"NCATS NIH HHS","grant_id":"UL1 TR00442","title":null}],"total_grants":9,"fwci":5.2813,"citation_percentile":0.96321865,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2013,"count":3},{"year":2014,"count":10},{"year":2015,"count":9},{"year":2016,"count":2},{"year":2017,"count":4},{"year":2018,"count":7},{"year":2019,"count":8},{"year":2020,"count":8},{"year":2021,"count":3},{"year":2022,"count":3},{"year":2023,"count":2},{"year":2024,"count":4},{"year":2025,"count":2}],"oa_status":"bronze","license":null,"oa_locations":[{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/jid/article-pdf/208/5/720/16865802/jit240.pdf","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://academic.oup.com/jid/article-pdf/208/5/720/16865802/jit240.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"http://academic.oup.com/jid/article-pdf/208/5/720/16865802/jit240.pdf","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/infdis/jit240","host_type":"journal"},{"url":"https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23715658","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/3733508","host_type":"repository"},{"url":"http://hdl.handle.net/10072/58058","host_type":"repository"}],"fields_of_study":["Bacterial Infections and Vaccines","Pneumonia and Respiratory Infections","Influenza Virus Research Studies"],"mesh_terms":["Antigenic Variation","Antigens, Bacterial","Carrier State","Haemophilus Infections","Haemophilus influenzae","Humans","Models, Theoretical","Nasopharynx","Sequence Analysis, DNA","Electrophoresis, Capillary","Gene Expression Profiling"],"keywords":["Haemophilus influenzae","Microbiology","Colonization","Pasteurellaceae","Biology","Virology","Antibiotics","Phase variation","Igab","Lex2a Nasopharyngeal Colonization","Lica"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[{"name":"gen"}],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-30T05:13:04.438301Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
