{"doi":"10.1093/infdis/jiac302","title":"Discrete Plasma Cytokine Profiles Among Pregnant Women in Botswana by <i>Chlamydia trachomatis</i> Infection, Human Immunodeficiency Virus Status, and Gestational Age","abstract":"To the Editor—We read with interest the article by Ravindran et al [1] on the association between sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and preterm birth in a population of pregnant women in western Kenya. These investigators found that despite treatment of pregnant women screened for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Treponema pallidum, and incident human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), any STI detected at or after 20 weeks’ gestation was associated with a higher risk for preterm birth compared to women with no STI. That association was absent in women treated for an STI before 20 weeks. Cervical inflammation (defined as endocervical gram stain showing >10 polymorphonuclear neutrophils per high-power field) was also associated with preterm birth.
