The field of vaccinology will be forever changed by the breath-takingly rapid speed of development of safe and effective vaccines for severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), using the breakthrough technology of modified mRNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles. Vaccine pursuits that have dragged on for decades against challenging pathogens, such as human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), had new life breathed into them with this novel, remarkably safe vaccine platform that is modular and rapid to mass-produce. Yet, the development of vaccines against viral pathogens with which the primate host has evolved for millions of years and has acquired highly effective immune evasion techniques are likely to require a more in-depth understanding of effective immunity and strategies to overcome immune evasion rather than just application of a new vaccine platform.
