An interesting and informative article by Potts et al, from the United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), appears in this issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases [1], reporting data from a large collection of penicillin-intermediate and -resistant isolates in the US in addition to the detection of β-lactamase–producing meningococci. The authors report testing of several antibiotics including β-lactams, ciprofloxacin, and rifampicin against meningococcal isolates that were submitted to the CDC. Neisseria meningitidis is a major agent of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) including septicemia and meningitis. IMD is lethal without prompt antibiotic treatment and may have a potential epidemic spread that requires antibiotic prophylaxis among close contacts of the index case to prevent transmission of virulent isolates.
