{"doi":"10.1093/ilar/ilac014","title":"Animals as Beneficiaries of Biomedical Research Originally Intended for Humans","abstract":"All of these species (although not every individual animal) have both benefited from and been used in research that was originally intended for human benefit. Most of this research is done in medical schools. Although intended for eventual human use, it is often subsequently found to be applicable to animals. Some of this research is done in veterinary hospitals and schools, either on sick animals or experimental animals. Following are some examples of each. About 100,000 hip replacements are carried out yearly on people in the United States, and about 350 are now performed on dogs. This is a classic example of a procedure originally worked out in dogs by veterinarians and physicians engaged in orthopedic research, applied clinically to people, and now applied to dogs.
