{"doi":"10.1093/ibd/izaf256","title":"Barriers and Opportunities for Resilience Programs in IBD: Insights From the SMART Project","abstract":"To the Editors: We read with great interest the recent article by Tse et al.1 The authors highlight a persistent gap between the acceptability of self-help resources and their actual utilization among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We are writing to share our experience with our prospective study designed to evaluate the impact of a structured Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) program2 on quality of life and healthcare utilization in adults with IBD. The protocol aimed to recruit 25 consecutive patients from the IBD clinic who had active disease and reported stress as a trigger for their gastrointestinal symptoms. We planned to provide each participant a 1.5-hour individualized consult with a certified SMART trainer, followed by a 12-week self-guided online program consisting of 4 modules. Assessments of stress levels and IBD quality of life (using validated tools such as the 36-item Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire and Perceived Stress Scale) were to be conducted at baseline and throughout the intervention period. The study aimed to provide new insights into the feasibility and effectiveness of resilience training for improving patient outcomes in IBD.
