The topics published in this issue go far beyond cardiology and touch upon many related specialties, underlining the importance of a holistic patient approach in modern medicine. Obesity is a complex and well-known disease with, however, various unexplored aspects. Due to the large number of controversial studies in this area, there was need for a consensus document to clarify the relationship between obesity and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and how management of the former can improve prevention of the latter. The clinical consensus statement of the ESC entitled ‘Obesity and cardiovascular disease: an ESC clinical consensus statement’ by Koskinas et al.1 includes available scientific evidence, and provides clinical recommendations for health professionals, aiming to improve the management strategies of patients with both obesity and CVD. As with any other disease, determining the aetiology and phenotypes of obesity is key in dictating subsequent proper patient management. These aspects are described in detail, including fat topography and body composition assessment. Given the complex and multi-factorial nature of obesity treatment, the ESC clinical consensus statement proposes a series of stepwise measures, including non-pharmacological, pharmacological, and interventional treatment strategies.
