{"doi":"10.1093/cid/ciaa980","title":"Reply to Bland and Jones","abstract":"To the Editor—The prevalence of a documented, unverified penicillin allergy among almost 11 000 inpatients receiving antibiotics from >100 US hospitals was recently 16% [1]. Yet, we know that up to 95% of these patients would not be allergic if they received comprehensive diagnostic penicillin allergy testing [2]. Evaluation of inpatient penicillin allergies improves antibiotic choices and aligns with antibiotic stewardship program (ASP) goals [3, 4]. One of the most important considerations for addressing inpatient penicillin allergies in the United States is understanding our current workforce, and it is clear that the current allergist/immunologist workforce is ill-equipped to tackle this problem alone [5]. We found that just 44% of surveyed hospitals had access to an allergist for inpatient consultations and 39% of hospitals had access to penicillin skin testing (PST) [5].
