A fitness measure that has been proposed in both the biological and the philosophical literature is the expected relative reproductive success. The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between expected relative reproductive success and future actual evolutionary success. Doing so will not only clarify the use of expected relative reproductive success as a fitness measure but also shed light on the role of fitness in the theory of natural selection. 1 Introduction2 The Role of Fitness3 Geometric Mean versus Expected Relative Reproductive Success4 Reconciliation5 Reconciliation Continued6 Alternative Justifications7 Conclusion","is_dataset_classified":null,"base_score":1.3862943611198906,"endowment":1.3862943611198906,"datacite_reuse_total":0,"file_count":0,"downloads":0,"views":0,"has_version_chain":false,"is_dataset":false,"is_oa":false,"pmid":"21097893","pmcid":null,"openalex_id":"https://openalex.org/W2747183856","authors":[],"funders":[],"total_grants":0,"fwci":0.0,"citation_percentile":0.20426218,"influential_citations":0,"citation_trend":[{"year":2022,"count":1},{"year":2023,"count":1},{"year":2024,"count":1}],"oa_status":"closed","license":"https://academic.oup.com/journals/pages/about_us/legal/notices","oa_locations":[{"url":"https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/pdf/10.1093/bjps/axx031","host_type":"publisher"},{"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/bjps/axx031","host_type":"journal"}],"fields_of_study":["Philosophy and History of Science","Evolutionary Game Theory and Cooperation","Reproductive Health and Technologies"],"mesh_terms":[],"keywords":["Natural selection","Reproductive success","Selection (genetic algorithm)","Natural (archaeology)","Measure (data warehouse)","Inclusive fitness","Ecology","Biology","Computer science","Demography","Artificial intelligence","Sociology"],"sdg_mappings":[],"linked_datasets":[],"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"database_accessions":[],"source":"live","citation_network_status":"fetched"},"created_at":"2026-07-30T05:02:46.304866Z","pmid":null,"pmcid":null,"fwci":null,"citation_percentile":null,"influential_citations":0,"oa_status":null,"license":null,"views":0,"total_file_size_bytes":0,"version_count":0,"fair_f":null,"fair_a":null,"fair_i":null,"fair_r":null,"fair_zscore":null,"fair_rationale":null,"fair_model":null,"fair_agent_version":null,"fair_fulltext_source":null,"fair_has_llm":null,"fair_computed_at":null,"clinical_trials":[],"software_tools":[],"db_accessions":[],"linked_datasets":[],"topics":[]}
